Reasons Behind Gray Bay

I am Julia and the founder owner of Gray Bay Marketing. I built my career as an operator first. Before advising other brands, I bootstrapped multiple 8-figure e-commerce businesses and built a restaurant group in the San Francisco Bay Area. Along the way, I invested more than $10 million of my own capital into marketing—across paid advertising, email marketing, SEO, and conversion optimization—making decisions with real margins, staffing, and operations on the line. Every marketing decision had real consequences for the business.

Like many founders, I worked with numerous marketing agencies and vendors over the years. While some delivered good work, I often felt a disconnect between marketing strategies and the realities of running a business. Campaign ideas looked good on paper but didn’t always align with operational constraints, customer behavior, or the pace of day-to-day operations. Over time, I gradually brought most marketing functions in-house so strategy, creative, and execution could work closely with how the business actually ran.

Over time, I also realized where I create the most value. While building and operating companies, I discovered that my real strength was in marketing—understanding how to position a brand, attract customers, and turn attention into sustainable growth. More importantly, I realized how much I enjoy helping other operators succeed.

Gray Bay Marketing was created to support founders who are busy running real businesses. Instead of marketing that exists in isolation, we focus on practical strategies that align with operations and drive measurable growth. By acting as a full internal marketing team, our goal is simple: give great operators the marketing support they deserve so they can stay focused on building great companies.

A Bit More About Me

I earned my MBA from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Anderson School of Management, where I built a strong foundation in branding, financial analysis, and data-driven marketing decision-making. That training continues to shape how I approach marketing today—balancing creative thinking with disciplined analysis to help businesses grow in a sustainable way.

Outside of work, I’m a mom to two boys and live in San Francisco with my husband. When I’m not working with founders, you’ll likely find our family crabbing along the bay or skiing together in Tahoe. Those moments keep me grounded and influence how I think about business. I believe the healthiest companies are built when founders protect their energy, stay focused on what they do best, and surround themselves with capable people so growth supports real life rather than leading to burnout.
